EC Regulation concerning the right of disabled persons with reduced mobility
A new European Commission regulation concerning the rights of passengers with reduced mobility comes into effect from 26th July, 2008. From that date the managing bodies of all EU airports will be responsible for ensuring the provision of assistance to passengers with reduced mobility.
The DAA has consulted with airlines, handling agents and disability user groups regarding the service levels for passengers with reduced mobility. The DAA will contract with a third party for the supply of services to passengers with reduced mobility and tenders will be sent shortly to a number of companies who have already completed the pre-qualifying phase.
The Regulation states that the costs associated with this service cannot serve to finance activities of the managing body other than those relating to the provision of such assistance and that the charges will be audited annually. Costs of this service will ultimately be borne by airlines and passengers and will emerge at the conclusion of the tendering process.
