| Marty Whelan
– Was your Host for the Gala Awards Evening
Marty Whelan is
admired and respected throughout Irish broadcasting
for his affable personality and his effortless
style. Marty spent five years working in an insurance
company before he made the break into radio in
1979. That was the year RTÉ launched its
pop radio station Radio 2, now 2FM, and Marty
quickly won over large audiences for shows such
as Drivetime and Marty till Midnight. Rounding
off his experience in daytime radio, Marty even
spent three years presenting 2FM's Breakfast Show.
In the mid-Eighties Marty Whelan began developing
his television career and he made an immediate
impression as the first male presenter of the
hit fashion programme Head 2 Toe. Other popular
TV shows followed, including the Where in the
World quiz programme (1986-1989) and Video File
(1983-1989), in which he interviewed major stars
of the music world. Since then, Marty has presented
such top-rated shows as Go for It, Off the Record
and Millionaire. He has also hosted RTÉ
One's lottery show Fame and Fortune on Saturday
nights for the past five years and for the last
six years was the master of ceremonies at the
annual Rose of Tralee Festival.
Marty's extensive television CV also includes
ten years as presenter of John Player Tops and
the Jacobs TV Awards. This unparalleled experience
of live television made him the ideal candidate
to co-present RTE One's afternoon show Open House
when it first came on air in 1998 and ran for
six years.
Each year Marty prepares himself to host RTE’s
coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest, and present
Fame and Fortune which returns on RTÉ.
This year saw Marty return to 2FM and he now
presents his own early morning show ‘Marty
in the Morning’.
Marty lives in Portmarnock in North Dublin with
his wife Maria and his two children Jessica and
Thomas.
